Hemophilia is a rare disorder that affects the bloods ability to clot properly. Clotting issues are the result of a lack of blood clotting proteins (clotting factors). Those who have hemophilia often bleed extensively when they have been wounded. Smaller cuts, such as scrapes, typically aren’t an issue. The greater concern is deep bleeding inside the body, particularly in the knees, ankles and elbows. Internal bleeding can damage organs and tissues, and can even be life-threatening.

Hemophilia is an inherited (genetic) disorder. While a cure has yet to be found, with proper treatment and self-care, most people with hemophilia can maintain an active, productive lifestyle.
